Are NYC Dinner Cruises Worth It?

Are New York dinner cruises worth it? Yes for an occasion and the night skyline; no if you only want the view, which a $45 sunset cruise or the free ferry give you.

Updated October 2026

A New York dinner cruise is worth it for an occasion, a birthday, an anniversary or a proposal, because the skyline and the Statue of Liberty at night are a view no restaurant on land can give you; it is not worth it if you only want the view, which a two-hour sunset cruise gives you for about a third of the price. The meal is good rather than the reason to go, and the reviews say so.

When it is worth it

When the evening is the point. On the big dining boats you get a reserved table, three hours if you choose Pier 36, music and the city lit up outside, which is why the reviews read like a list of birthdays and anniversaries. City Cruises’ glass-roofed luxury boat is rated 4.5 from more than a thousand reviews, and guests repeatedly say the food was better than they expected.

When you would eat out anyway. A three-course dinner and a bottle of wine in a good Manhattan restaurant is not far off the fare of a dinner cruise. If the alternative is that restaurant, the cruise adds the harbor for a modest premium.

When it is not

When you only want the skyline. Circle Line’s Sunset & Harbor Lights Cruise is two hours at golden hour with a live guide, passes within 100 feet of the statue and is the most booked evening cruise in New York, from $45 a person. You can buy a drink on board and eat afterwards on land for much less than a dinner cruise costs.

When money is tight. The Staten Island Ferry is free, runs around the clock and passes the Statue of Liberty in about 25 minutes each way from Whitehall Terminal. The NYC Ferry costs $5 a ride since 19 October 2026. Neither is a night out, but both put you on the harbor at dusk.

When the meal must be excellent. Dinner on a boat is cooked for hundreds in a galley. It is good, and the luxury boat’s prix fixe gets the best comments, but if the food is the reason for the evening, book a restaurant and take a sunset cruise before it.

The verdict

Book the dinner cruise for a celebration and the sunset cruise for sightseeing. If you are unsure, the dinner cruises on this site can all be cancelled free up to 24 hours before, so book the date you want and decide closer to the time. Dinner cruise or sunset cruise? compares the two in detail.
